Assured autonomy is rapidly gaining traction in U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) circles. The term broadly relates to how to put security into autonomous operations. Assurance will encourage people to adopt autonomous systems, and reduce societal harm from insecure autonomous systems. We talked with experts at the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) and the ARL-funded Assured Autonomy Innovation Institute (A212) at Purdue about assured autonomy, its current state, what the institute is doing, and what the future holds.
During Eugene H. Spafford’s more than three decades as professor of computer sciences at Purdue University, in West Lafayette, Ind., he has made groundbreaking contributions to computer and network security. A member of the Cyber Security Hall of Fame, he is considered one of the most influential leaders in information security.
