Purdue University is located in West Lafayette, Indiana which is about 65 miles north of Indianapolis and 135 miles south of Chicago off of I-65.


Local Weather

Plan on bringing the appropriate clothing for the area. Indiana can be hot in the summer, cold in the winter as well as everything else in between. Before traveling, check one of the online weather sites to be sure that you will be comfortable during your stay. Also, be sure to pack an umbrella for those unexpected rain showers.

Time Zone

We are in the Eastern time zone, along with New York, NY (-5:00 GMT) and the east coast of the United States.

Since 2006 Indiana observes Daylight Saving Time.

Getting to CERIAS

Plane

  • Indianapolis International Airport (code: IND) is the best choice and is serviced by most major airlines and their partner airlines. Directions for ground transportation can be found at the airport’s Ground Transportation Center.

    The Lafayette Limo shuttle bus departs Indianapolis International Airport daily every 2 hours between 6:30 AM, and 10:30 PM. The trip will take between 1 hour and 10 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes depending on traffic and your final destination in the Lafayette / West Lafayette area. Call (765) 497-3828 or check their website for more information. Reservations are encouraged especially around times when the campus is on break. The Lafayette Limo has pick-up/drop-off locations at the Purdue Memorial Union and the Four Points by Sheraton.

    Alternatively, a car can be rented. A list of rental car companies can be found at the airport’s Ground Transportation Center. (please see driving instructions from Indianapolis)

  • Purdue University Airport (code: LAF) is less than 1 mile from campus and is available for private planes. It is currently not served by any commercial airlines.

  • Chicago O’Hare International Airport (code: ORD) is located approximately 140 miles north of Greater Lafayette and is approximately a 3 hour drive from the airport to Purdue. (please see driving instructions from Chicago)

    Shuttle Service: The Reindeer Shuttle bus departs Chicago O’Hare Airport during high demand periods such as Winter Break, Spring Break, Summer Break, and Thanksgiving Break. Buses used by Reindeer Shuttle bus typically has leather seats, wooden floors, and complimentary WiFi. The trip takes 2 hours and 30 minutes depending on traffic and your final destination. Please visit reindeershuttle.com for more information. The Reindeer Shuttle has pick-up/drop-off locations at Beau Jardin Apartments, Purdue Memorial Union, and Wiley Hall.

  • Chicago Midway International Airport (code: MDW) is located approximately 127 miles north of Greater Lafayette and is approximately a 2 hour and 23 minute drive from the airport to Purdue. (please see driving instructions from Chicago)

Automobile

Purdue can be reached conveniently by car from a number of cities in the midwest, with most routes being through either Chicago or Indianapolis.

During business hours, parking on campus is by permit only. To obtain a parking permit, contact Purdue Parking and Transportation.

Driving Directions Disclaimer

Driving Directions from the Indianapolis Airport (IND) (1hr 14min without traffic)

West Lafayette is approximately 65 miles northwest of Indianapolis.

Upon exiting the airport, head toward Indianapolis and follow the signs for I-465 North. Take I-465 North approximately 9 miles and exit to I-65 North.

Take I-65 North (toward Chicago) to Lafayette and exit on State Road IN 26 (exit 172).

Turn left at the light and follow IN 26 approximately 5 miles through Lafayette and into West Lafayette where it will become State Street.

Continue up State Street Hill (IN 26) and move into the right lane.

Turn right onto University Street (a one-way street).

Move into the left lane and continue two blocks to 2nd Avenue (one block before the traffic light).

Turn left. The parking garage will be on your right. Park in any “A” spot. (Permit required, see Parking)

Driving Directions from Chicago O’hare Airport (ORD) (2hr 22mins without traffic)

West Lafayette is approximately 135 miles southeast of Chicago

Get on I-190E, take to I-294 S.

Take I-294 S to I-80 E

Keep on I-80 E to I-65 S

Take I-65 South to State Road 26 (exit 172).

Turn right onto State Road 26 West and follow it approximately 5 miles through Lafayette and into West Lafayette, where it will become State Street.

Continue up State Street hill and move into the right lane.

Turn right onto University Street (a one-way street).

Move into the left lane and continue two blocks to 2nd Avenue (one block before the traffic light).

Turn left. The parking garage will be on your right. Park in any “A” spot. (Permit required, see Parking)

To Reach the Recitation Building from the Parking Garage

Heading east, cross University street, and continue east, beneath a breezeway (Math building) - The Recitation Building will be directly South/East (ahead and to your right).

Train

Train service to Lafayette is available from Indianapolis, Chicago, and several other cities. The most likely connection is via Chicago, and is described below. For directions from other departure points, consult Amtrak’s site. To get to the Amtrak Station or Greyhound Bus Terminal in Chicago from O’Hare Airport, take the Continental Express Shuttle (773 454-7800) to Union Station, 225 Canal Street, Chicago. For assistance, Continental’s uniformed ticket agents are located in the baggage claims areas of terminals 1, 2, and 3 as well as outside U.S. Customs in Terminal 5. From Union Station, take the Amtrak train bound for Lafayette, IN. It would be advantageous to book a seat in advance. The toll-free number is (800) 872-7245.

Bus

Greyhound Bus services the Greater Lafayette area from Chicago, Gary, Hammond, and Indianapolis, and thence from other locales. Schedules and fares vary, so consult the Greyhound site or call 800-231-2222.
