October 2023 marks the 20th anniversary of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, established in 2003 through a collaboration between the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the National Cyber Security Alliance.

To raise cybersecurity awareness across the Purdue University community, the Purdue Systems Security (PSS) team has scheduled a series of speakers in partnership with the Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security (CERIAS), Cisco and KnowBe4.

“Cybersecurity Awareness is critical to enhance our collective knowledge of current and ongoing cyber threats. The more we know, the safer we become,” said Senior Cybersecurity Awareness Specialist Nolyn Johnson.

"The Dark Side of AI: Malware, Scams, and Beyond"

Unsurprisingly, hackers and scammers are drawn to the allure of AI tools like ChatGPT. As AI continues gaining traction and reshaping industries, bad actors recognize the opportunity to exploit this technology for their gain. Tools like ChatGPT have generated significant interest and excitement, showcasing the limitless potential of AI-powered technology. However, with every groundbreaking innovation comes the risk of exploitation. Cybercriminals are capitalizing on the popularity of emerging technologies like ChatGPT, using them for malicious activities. In this new landscape, businesses, individuals, and the tech community must understand the implications of AI on cybersecurity and take proactive steps to ensure the safety and integrity of their data to continue to reduce their risk of cyber attacks and data breaches.

James McQuiggan is a Security Awareness Advocate for KnowBe4. Prior to joining KnowBe4, McQuiggan worked for Siemens for eighteen years where he was responsible for various roles, including his most recent as Product & Solution Security Officer for Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy. In addition to his work at Siemens, McQuiggan is also a part-time faculty professor at Valencia College in the Engineering, Computer Programming & Technology Division.

James is a CISSP and within the central Florida community, he is the President of the Central Florida (ISC)2 Chapter where he supports cybersecurity professionals with education and networking opportunities. Working with the Center for Cyber Safety and Education, he has taught the Safe and Secure Online education and awareness program to over 7,000 students, parents, teachers and the “life-experienced” (seniors) to ensure they understand the dangers of the internet. McQuiggan holds the SACP certification.
