Conducting Searches in a Computer Environment

Dec 04, 1998

Abstract

Because of the widespread use of microcomputers, the FBI is being forced to confront the issues of digital evidence. Computers are being used as repositories as well as tools to execute crimes. The FBI has developed the Computer Analysis Response Team to preserve, analyze, and present the digital data seized as the result of its investigations. The FBI CART Examiner must use well-established processing protocols and proven software.
SSA Schmidtknecht will discuss the potential problems of executing a search warrant where computers or computer related evidence is involved. SSA Schmidtknecht will describe what a CART Field Examiner or Computer Forensic Specialist can do to assist an investigation. SSA Schmidtknecht will provide a case study on why the physical evidence at a search can be an important part of the investigation. SSA Schmidtknecht will also discuss what initiatives the FBI is employing to handle the increasing need and continuing challenges of preserving and obtaining computer evidence.
