Abstract
The debate over how identifying information is used online has a focus in the decisions over identity policies employed in online communities. The now-common decision -- between anonymous, pseudonymous, and "real name" handles -- has implications for interaction not only within the community in question but outside of it. We explore these in a framework for the explanation of how individual decisions form and are formed by existing social structures.
