Meeting Notes

Attendees:

  • Keith Watson, CERIAS
  • Preston Wiley, CERIS
  • Mike Hill, CERIS
  • Nathan Heck, ITNS
  • Doug Couch, ITNS
  • Jeff Smith, ITNS
  • Sarath Geethakumar, CERIAS

Presentations:

Mike Hill from the Center for Environmental and Regulatory Information Systems (CERIS) discussed some specific findings from an audit for his National Plant Diagnostic Network database, and how he addressed them. Mike's solution involved gathering more reliable information about activities and errors that were occurring. This allowed him to build reports that provide a better overall picture of attacks and unknown error conditions.

Keith Watson from the Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security (CERIAS) talked about status reporting in operating systems and applications. This talk focused on a variety of status report systems in some UNIX-based operating systems and how to write your own. I will provide code examples in Ruby for sending status information to several online services.

The slides will be available online at a later date.

Discussion Points:

  1. Keith provided the group with an update on activities between (ISC)^2 and CERIAS. (ISC)^2 is very interested in working closely with CERIAS. Some proposed ideas include hosting a review session and a certification test at Purdue. Other discussions include hosting a security leadership symposium at Purdue. We are trying to determine the exact dates but the exam will most likely be held in November 2009. More details to come.

  2. Sarath provided the group with information about the CERIAS Student Association. It is a new student organization that will soon be recognized by the university for students interested in information security. Keith is one of the faculty advisers to the new organization. We will explore opportunities in conjunction with this new group. An email with additional information about the group will be sent soon. We need some volunteers to serves as liaisons to this new group.

  3. We discussed briefly future meeting presentations and subjects. There is a list of subjects that Preston Wiley put together on the wiki. Please add to the list and attach your names to topics that you are interested in presenting. The "two talks in an hour" approach appealed to most of the attendees.

  4. We discussed the need for and organization of certification study groups and test preparation methods.

Action Items

Note: All previous Action Items are due before the next meeting.
