CERIAS Hits High Mark in Externally Funded Security Research

Thu, October 26, 2017

Purdue University faculty affiliated with the Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security (CERIAS) helped secure more than $18M new external funding in cyber-/cyber-physical research during the 2016-17 academic year, a high mark for the center, , preparing to celebrate it’s 20th anniversary. CERIAS received “center credit” for more than $10M of the funding.

The new funding is supporting more than twenty faculty, from six different departments, conducting research with an assurance, security, privacy and forensics focus in data, network, and system (cyber and cyber-physical) domains. The research includes both basic and applied work being funded by commercial and governmental agencies. “The work being done by CERIAS faculty is addressing nearly all sectors. “We continue to break new ground in the protection of enterprise networks and data, but we’ve also seen a dramatic increase in work addressing cyber-physical and cyber-enabled concerns. The growing interconnectivity of devices in homes, factories, vehicles, and on our person – all generically being lumped into the term “internet of things” or IoT, has both increased efficiencies and opportunities for our lives, but has quite dramatically increased our risks and vulnerabilities,” explained Prof. Dongyan Xu, CERIAS Interim Director and professor of computer science.

“In 1998 CERIAS was founded as an interdisciplinary institute; it’s rewarding to see that the exceptional work being done today across so many Purdue departments and disciplines. Faculty continues to collaborate across campus at all points along the R&D spectrum,” said Prof. Eugene H. Spafford, CERIAS Founder and Director Emeritus, and professor of Computer Science. “It’s been a banner year, shared Joel Rasmus, CERIAS Managing Director, “we’ve added additional programs and resources to support CERIAS affiliated faculty, provided twelve research assistantships (RAs) to students conducting research with our affiliated faculty, and offered CERIAS funded seed grants to help our faculty start new projects.”

CERIAS, a Purdue Discovery Park institute, is one of the “Original Seven” DHS/NSA Centers for Academic Excellence (CAE) in information assurance, and a Center for Academic Excellent in Research (CAE-R). It is internationally recognized as being one of the preeminent universities for information security, most recently being ranked number one by CyberDegrees.org, a Washington, D.C.-based publisher of informational websites on higher education.
