During the editing process, we cut several pieces from the newsletter, including the one that described COAST, and that defined the acronym "COAST." As not everyone may be familiar with COAST, and many of you may not have WWW access to read the full-text explanation, we include a short description here. ---- COAST -- Computer Operations, Audit, and Security Technology -- is a multiple project, multiple investigator effort in computer security. We focus our research on real-world needs and limitations, rather than on purely theoretical investigations. Our efforts are intended to function with close ties to researchers and engineers in major companies and government agencies: designers and end-users of *real* systems. By this we mean legacy and future "open" systems, rather than multi-level or CMW systems of interest to only a narrow, defense-related community. We intend to develop COAST as a leading-edge center for research, testing, and education in computer security. This process will be shaped by scientific and pedagogical goals set by the research personnel, and by advice and guidance from our sponsors. Our efforts will build on our established records of innovation and success: personnel associated with COAST have designed and developed widely used tools and techniques in computer security, operating systems, and software engineering. We also have experience in long-term collaboration with commercial firms and government agencies. This experience and focus will help us identify an agenda of interest both for the academic community and the community of practitioners. Personnel associated with COAST are also involved with the PCERT (Purdue Computer Emergency Response Team), organized to respond to computer security incidents at Purdue University, with the SERC (Software Engineering Research Center), and with the PADS (Parallel and Distributed Systems) groups at Purdue. This provides us with additional resources, perspective, and breadth of experience.
